A Question Every Believer Should Ask
In a world where spiritual identity is often measured by church attendance, ministry involvement, or theological knowledge, it’s easy to overlook one of the most vital indicators of genuine faith: the fruit of the Spirit. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, outlines these fruits as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). These are not mere personality traits or moral aspirations; they are the evidence of a life transformed by the Holy Spirit.
So, let’s pause and ask the question: Are you bearing spiritual fruits?
What Does It Mean to Bear Spiritual Fruit?
To bear spiritual fruit means to exhibit the character and nature of Christ in our daily lives. Just as a healthy tree naturally produces fruit, a believer rooted in Christ will naturally reflect His attributes. Jesus Himself said, “By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:16). Our actions, attitudes, and responses to life’s challenges reveal the condition of our hearts.
Why This Question Matters
It’s a measure of spiritual health: Just as a doctor checks vital signs to assess physical health, examining our spiritual fruit helps us gauge our walk with God.
It reflects our witness: The world is watching. Our fruit; or lack thereof; can either draw people to Christ or push them away.
It aligns us with God’s purpose: We were not saved to remain stagnant. Jesus said, “I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit; fruit that will last” (John 15:16).
The Nine Fruits: A Heart Check
Let’s reflect on each fruit of the Spirit and ask ourselves some honest questions:
Love: Do I love others unconditionally, even when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable? Is my love sacrificial and Christlike?
Joy: Is my joy rooted in Christ, or does it fluctuate with my circumstances? Do I radiate joy that uplifts others?
Peace: Do I carry a calm assurance even in the midst of chaos? Am I a peacemaker in my relationships?
Patience: How do I respond when things don’t go my way? Am I quick to anger or slow to frustration?
Kindness: Am I considerate and compassionate, even to those who can’t repay me? Do I go out of my way to bless others?
Goodness: Do I pursue what is right, even when no one is watching? Is my life marked by integrity and moral courage?
Faithfulness: Am I dependable and loyal in my commitments to God and others? Do I follow through on what I say?
Gentleness: Do I correct others with humility and grace? Is my strength under control, especially in conflict?
Self-Control: Do I resist temptation and make choices that honor God? Am I disciplined in my thoughts, words, and actions?
How to Cultivate Spiritual Fruit!
Bearing fruit isn’t about striving harder; it’s about abiding deeper. Jesus said, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself” (John 15:4). Here’s how to stay connected:
Daily communion with God through prayer and Scripture
Obedience to the Holy Spirit’s promptings
Fellowship with other believers for encouragement and accountability
Repentance when we fall short, trusting in God’s grace to grow us
Spiritual fruit isn’t optional; it’s essential. It’s not about perfection, but progression. The question isn’t whether you’ve arrived, but whether you’re growing. So today, take a moment to reflect: Am I bearing spiritual fruit? If not, don’t despair. God is the Master Gardener, and He delights in cultivating growth in willing hearts.
Let this question not condemn, but compel you; to deeper intimacy, greater surrender, and a life that glorifies God.
